Mindfulness is being aware and present to what is happening right now — in mind, body, emotions, in relationship, and in the environment. As a conscious practice it can help cultivate more capacity for simply observing one’s experience without judgement. A mindfulness practice can also help redirect the tendency we all have to either ruminate about the past, or worry about the future. Mindfulness skills can be honed through meditation and breathing practices as well as simple moment to moment attention in the activities of daily life, and I encourage people to explore various meditation and mindfulness practices that are a good fit for them. In the context of our therapy sessions, mindfulness is integrated through the attention to the ever shifting feelings, thoughts and experiences as they arise moment to moment.
